Yet here was a game ostensibly emulating that process, while also demanding that the human interloper not only add unnatural decoration, but direct the actions of nature itself. They must solve a puzzle.įlyn’s book - at least, in the parts about areas reclaimed by nature - details the beauty and wonder of what happens without human interference. My problem with the game was twofold: the player must also add and harvest seeds, and the player must achieve a certain level of growth in order to proceed to the next scene. The fundamental concept of Cloud Gardens is that the player scatters human detritus into a diorama - electronics, furniture, vehicles, structures - and various plants and trees use these as catalysts to spread and grow. I first played Cloud Gardens just a day or two after finishing Islands of Abandonment and, to be honest, it was for this reason that I initially didn’t like it. Her hope that the planet is not yet beyond saving her hope that in the battle between humanity and nature, there does not need to be a battered and broken loser. Nonetheless, reading Flyn’s detailed accounts gave me a greater understanding of the speed, intricacy, prevalence, and importance of such events. I don’t pretend to understand how this happens and, to be honest, I prefer not knowing. Flyn even records instances of incredibly rare flora and/or fauna appearing in such places where there was no sign before. When given the chance, nature sweeps through our metal and concrete hives with impressive, unstoppable speed and power. One of my biggest learnings from the book is the speed with which such places - houses, factories, entire towns - can look as though they have been abandoned for decades rather than a year or two. It is also largely - for the first half or so of the book, at least - about human spaces that have been abandoned by people, and reclaimed by nature. In order to explain why, I must first talk a little about Cal Flyn’s book Islands of Abandonment, which I've just finished reading.įlyn's book tackles different kinds of abandonment, including people who have abandoned society, and people whom society has abandoned. I’ve recently spent some time playing Cloud Gardens, which serves to support both views, and even to put a positive spin on the latter. I hold these two truths in my head without conflict. However, when the last of us is gone - be that through our own arrogance, or any other means - the planet will remain. There is no rational way to deny the impact that we have had, and will continue to have, on Earth. Even on the immensely wider scale of humanity itself, we are not as important as we like to think we are. Of the approximately 8 billion people alive today, the percentage that will never know you existed is so high, under any other circumstances you would round it to 100 percent. Countless yesterdays passed millenia before your birth, and tomorrow will come whether you are there to see it or not. “The world doesn’t revolve around you” is the greatest truth you will ever be told. On a wider scale yet, we build and (sadly, more often) break the very planet itself, changing it in ways that could never have come to pass without us. On a wider scale, we all build and break one another’s personalities through our interactions we create one another. Certain surfaces yield to our weight, as we shape the very ground that we walk on. Then there are the footprints that we all leave as we pass through the world, both literal and metaphorical. Everything you see, and how you see it everything you think, and how you think it everything you do, and how you do it it all comes together to produce a perception of the world - the only perception of the world that you have - that never existed before your birth, and will never exist again after your death. “The world doesn’t revolve around you” is the greatest lie you will ever be told.

Professor Jones and Museum Curator Brody are the teachers while the two Army officers, along with us, are the students.Įarly in the scene, we’re reminded of Indy’s expertise: Professor of Archeology, expert in the occult, and obtainer of rare antiquities. The Summary: Even though the scene is five minutes long, it never feels forced or labored because we get all the critical information that sets up the entire story by using characters that are authorities in the field. The Exposition: Indy and Brody explain that the Nazi’s have discovered Tanis, an ancient city and possible burial site of the Ark of the Covenant, which holds epic mystical power. Mulwray are addressing the council committee and council chamber audience. is dying of thirst.” Screenwriter Robert Towne doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel here as the exposition comes out quite literally as a lecture, but we accept it because former mayor Bagby and Mr. The Summary: In only two minutes and twenty seconds, this scene alone sets up the entire dramatic situation and the circumstances surrounding the action: “L.A. The Exposition: We learn the about the importance of water in Los Angeles and the dramatic set up that propels the story forward to the final resolution. The Scene: Gittes (Jack Nicholson) sits through a council meeting at City Hall regarding the “Proposed Alto Vallejo Dam and Reservoir”. While trying to get John excited about this seasons last crash, Jeremy tells John that this will be “the greatest crash of all time.” We learn that this “Kentucky Derby of weddings” is for Treasury Secretary Cleary’s daughter and “there is no room for error.” The prospect of secret service excites Jeremy, who also refers to the sacred crashing rules that have been passed down to them 12 years ago by their mentor, Chaz Reinhold, a man John sees as a loser, yet Jeremy reveres.ĭownload the screenplay for THE WEDDING CRASHERS here for free The Summary: Not only do we see how the friendship between John and Jeremy operates – Jeremy clearly the instigator in the driver seat, but we also set up the entire story during this two-minute scene. The Exposition: We learn about their wedding crashing experience and expertise, the fact that there are sacred rules to wedding crashing that have been passed down to them, as well as key details as to the importance of who is getting married. The Scene: Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) convinces John (Owen Wilson) to crash one more wedding: the biggest nuptial of the year. Since there are so many different purposes for exposition and it can be presented in so many different ways, we felt it was necessary to narrow the road and base our list on two very distinct rules: Rule #1 – Exposition that occurs in one singular scene & Rule: #2 – Exposition that delivers information ONLY on plot and/or the world of the story. The skilled screenwriter delivers it through conflict (an argument that starts about one thing escalates when past issues are brought up), through humor (a character teasing another will often illustrate by referring to events of the past), through a character whose occupation demands a delivery of information (professor, lawyer, judge, scientist, etc), or during intense action (a car chase, a shootout, or even just a jog through the park). When the presentation of the information comes out as a forced monologue, it is often referred to as an “info dump” or “idiot lecture.” Good exposition, however, never simply “dumps” information in our lap. Every film has it, but not every film does it well. Exposition is a necessary tool for the screenwriter and often one that is essential to understanding plot, character, setting, and/or theme because it provides an explanation of necessary background information to the audience. What I am looking for is a method, that when called, will return the amount I have to add to the pitch to account for the arrow falling down. Pitch += distanceToTarget / 4 // Distance is measured in blocks I tried the basic stuff like the following: If you aim to high, the arrow will fly over their head, whereas if you aim to low, the arrow will hit the ground before reaching the target. How high you aim is based on how far your target is. This is necessary because arrows naturally fall downwards, so you have to aim higher, to account for your arrow falling over down over time. Not much needs to be said about this one, since even if you don't really know what a montage is, you know what a training montage is. (Some of my favorites come from Shaun of the Dead.)Ĭlassic. Filmmakers do this all the time and it's a good way to add comedy to an otherwise neutral segment in a film. This is less of a "genre" of montage - it's more like a "subgenre", since they serve a larger narrative purpose, like shortening time, etc., but they're packaged inside of a joke. Maybe you need to show the downfall of a powerful company - you could do in a series of scenes where employees frantically shred documents, FBI agents raid their offices, and interrogate its CEOs, but if you want to condense that time, you might want to use a montage in which all these things happen in mere seconds rather than minutes.Ī montage can be used to condense time and space, but they can also be used to serve up a nice punchline. Griffith that the concept of "editing" came to light, and furthermore, it wasn't until filmmakers Eisenstein, Pudovkin, and Kuleshov that we had this idea that editing could have significant emotional and psychological effects on a viewer by condensing space, time, and information in the form of a series of short shots called a montage. This is called the Soviet Montage Theory. In the beginning, films were single-shot pieces - a woman dancing, a baby eating, a train arriving to a station. (More on that later.) In this top 10 list from CineFix, you'll see a wide array of different kinds of montages - ones that compress time, reveal the quirks of a character, and combine storylines - but you'll also get a meaty lesson on what montages do, as well as how and why you should implement them into your own films. Think about it - montages are wholly cinematic, born entirely from the womb of editing, and are able to elicit emotions from an audience simply by the way they're constructed. In years when hatchery goals are exceeded, excess sturgeon are stocked above Shoshone Falls. Fish and Game began supplementing their numbers with hatchery sturgeon. Kennedy said the dams have deep pools that are the type of habitat sturgeon prefer.Īlthough sturgeon are native to the Columbia and Snake rivers, dams cut off the fish from spawning waters. Hot spots for sturgeon in the upper Snake River include areas below dams, such as the Gem Lake Dam and in particular, the American Falls Dam. Pat Kennedy, fisheries biologist in Idaho Falls, said the summer study reached up to the power plant just below the falls in downtown Idaho Falls. “Ultimately, this work will help develop management strategies to sustain and improve opportunity to catch these amazing fish,” Fish and Game’s Terry Thompson said in a statement. After initial findings, Fish and Game decided to dig deeper to study the population and collaborate with the University of Idaho over the next two years. Fish ranged in size from 2 feet to 8 feet long. IDFG’s summer survey collected 116 sturgeon from Milner Dam upstream to Idaho Falls. It is illegal to remove a sturgeon from the water. For those reasons – and because Snake River sturgeon have been blocked from migrating to traditional spawning areas by dams – sturgeon fishing in Idaho is catch-and-release only with specific gear regulations to protect the fish. Sturgeon can live to be more than 100 years old, grow to 10 to 12 feet long, weigh more than 200 pounds and don’t spawn until they’re 20 years old. That’s encouraging to see that they’re growing fast.” We did find out that growth rates were higher than what we’ve seen in our more wild, historic sturgeon populations, say in like Hell’s Canyon, and in and below Bliss Dam. “We did find out that it is a more robust fishery than we thought,” said Joe Thiessen, regional fisheries biologist and lead on the study. This summer, fisheries biologists decided to take a peek to see if it was worth a deeper study. Idaho Fish and Game has been dropping hundreds of white sturgeon into the Snake River between Idaho Falls and the American Falls Dam for the past 30 years but has never paused to take a look at what’s going on with the fish that is not native to the river above Shoshone Falls. They can’t get enough air.IDAHO FALLS – Even though sturgeon have been around unchanged for more than 200 million years, knowledge of the relative newcomer now patrolling the upper Snake River of eastern Idaho is a big question mark. There’s just no oxygen left in the water,” said Daniel Dane, owner of Idaho Troutfitters in Twin Falls. You know the fish are poaching basically. “My wife and I put our thermometers in the water and its over 70 degrees. Many anglers across the state know the affects that high temperatures have on fish and are worried for future summers. “These conditions basically have these fish right on the edge of what they are physiologically able to withstand,” said Art Butts, IDFG fish manager for the southwest region. IDFG officials say conservation efforts are important during times of unprecedented weather. The portion of water near CJ Strike Reservoir is closed until September 25. This has forced Idaho Fish and Game (IDFG) to close portions of the Snake River to study what is causing high mortality rates in sturgeon. As warm weather continues across Idaho, fish populations are suffering from deoxygenated water and abnormal living conditions. |
